That's cool and all, but I feel bad for it. It was perfectly okay with an internal combustion engine!

"EVNetics Solution 1 EV Controller - Water Cooled (1000 Amps) The new owner will need to be proficient in EV technology or wants to learn about them. I learned everything I needed from reading and youtube! "
I don't know if that's supposed to make me feel better, or what.

EV's are no more a fire hazard than any other car. (except some Ferraris and Lambos) I don't follow your reasoning.

I can tell you that he probably joined a lot of forums. There are a lot of experienced builders and engineers on the forums. You can't learn everything from Utube. I will say that looking at the pictures, this guy did a first rate job of construction and used top shelf materials. This is not going to catch fire. I have built 3 EV's. I know what goes into them and how much it costs to do it right.

If you pick the experienced builders and engineers on the forums and ask questions, you will gain the knowledge needed to build a very safe, reliable EV.

Do tell! Really. I'm quite interested in building an EV. How difficult was it? I'd love to build an EV around a locost/Caterham frame. Thing is, right now I lack the time/shop/knowledge to do it. What did you use for batteries, charge controller, etc?

I use fifteen 8 volt batteries powering a NetGain WarP9 motor and controller. The controller is the most expensive piece on an EV. I would like to use a Zilla controller but you can easily spend over $2k on a controller. It is not too hard to build one if you stick with some of the more popular platforms like VW's and MG and Triumph and Chevy small cars. You don't have to fabricate all the parts. They are available. I opted to keep the 4 speed transmission in the MG. The adapter plate was readily available.

How was the performance and range?

Performance is dialed back but is adequate. That was done to extend the range and protect the controller and batteries. The thing about lead acid batteries is they can overheat when you start drawing massive amounts of current through them. Earlier on I literally melted the terminal post on a battery.
Range is better than 40 miles but I try not to exceed that before charging.

Not too shabby.
I wish Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries were more common. They seem to have some interesting properties.
